Glasgow Conference 1999 - In pictures

Delegates gathered in Glasgow for this years annual conference themed "tools of the trade" and for the first year we started the conference with registration on Friday evening and a fascinating talk sponsored by the FT, from, Janet Seaton Head of Research and Information Services The Scottish Parliament. This was followed by a buffet supper and drinks held in the adjoining exhibitor suite.

After a good nights sleep - some better than others in their more luxurious "Feng-shui" rooms, we assembled on Saturday morning to hear speakers on how to be an information editor, with personal accounts from Panorama’s Annabel Colley and Linday Iley of News International

During coffee there was the first opportunity to place bids at the silent auction, and the popular items were soon established.

 

"Before the day was over it almost got to fisticuffs over the Clinton Gore pencil, the signed Dilbert cartoons and the News of the World Darts medal.

This was the first year this was run and a grand total of £220 was raised.

Jonathan Gordon-Till and Sheila Weber gave us numerous tips respectively on finding information about people and finding companies on the Internet

After lunch,

A panel consisting of Alan Gibson Televisual, Sheila Webber, University of Strathclyde, Hazel Hall Napier University, and Pat Baird Scottish Media Group fielded a discussion on the impact of the Web on information and information intermediaries entitled "The Great Electronic Information Bazaar." The debate was finally closed around 5pm.

An evening civic reception was held in the grand Glasgow City Chambers

We returned to the hotel to find a banquet style table laid for our conference dinner

Writer and broadcaster Bob Crampsey entertained us with his annecdotes,

 

and the most coveted auction items were awarded After the customary marathon Saturday night evening session, those with enough stamina on Sunday morning braved the cold and clambered onto one of Glasgows fine open top buses to

With the tour over it was back to the hotel foyer for welcome hot chocolate and to meet up with those who had had a longer lie in! Goodbyes were said for another year and it was back home clutching our auction goodies until we meet again.

Bob Crampsey. A writer and broadcaster with encyclopaedic knowledge, especially of sporting matters. A devotee of good old fashioned library services. Also a former Brain of Britain

Sunday A bus tour of Architectural gems in these parts.

Travel Information

Glasgow is very accessible by Air, Rail and Road.

Air: From Heathrow (BA, BM), Gatwick (BA), Stansted (Ryanair, Air UK) and Luton (EasyJet)

Most airlines offer cheap fares if you book well in advance. The cheapest is probably EasyJet from Luton (£46 upwards including taxes.)

Flights also go from East Midlands, Bristol, Manchester and Leeds.

There are also flights from many European cities, including Copenhagen.

From Glasgow Airport there is a bus which stops at Posthouse Hotel in Bothwell Street. It costs about £3. Taxis cost about £12.

Rail

From London, services are operated by Virgin (Euston via The West Coast) and GNER (Kings Cross via The East Coast and Edinburgh).

Services  also operate from Birmingham, Leeds, York, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, and most other cities...

At the last estimate there were 26 different fares from London to Glasgow. Book early.

Road:

From England: M6 /  M74 /  M73 /  M8 right to the centre of Glasgow. Delegates will be sent a map with the booking confirmation.

AUKML ANNUAL CONFERENCE 1999

 

SPONSORSHIP GUIDELINES

 

The committee propose to sponsor 4 librarians to attend the conference of the Association of UK Media Librarians.

The sponsorship covers:

  1. Conference fees (worth at least £280).
  2. Hotel accommodation on Friday and Saturday evening of the conference weekend.
  3. Conference dinner on Saturday evening (drinks excluded).
  4. Breakfast at the hotel on Saturday and Sunday morning.
  5. Lunch on Saturday.

The applicants must:

  1. Be an AUKML member.
  2. Prove that their employers are unable/unwilling to pay their conference fees.
  3. Submit a proposal on why they wish to attend the conference.
  4. Write two articles for the associations journal ‘Deadline’. On 1). their experiences of the conference and 2). a piece on their own particular library. These articles must be received within the month following the conference.
  5. Meet their own travel expenses and arrangements.

 

Applications are confidential and will be seen by the committee and Chairperson only. The committee’s decision is final and correspondence will not be entered into. The sponsorship can not be exchanged for cash. Applicants must attend the conference sessions.
