Programme
We are meeting over the weekend at The Palace Hotel, an historic grade II listed building full of character located in the heart of Manchester. It has recently had a major refurbishment to bring the rooms up to today's high four star standards and is located close to a host of stylish and elegant bars, clubs and restaurants.
We begin on Friday afternoon with learning visits, guided by archivists and curators, to the fascinating North West Film Archive which houses images from the 1890s, and to the outstanding Imperial War Museum North with its remarkable audio visual show on giant screens. In the evening the opening conference reception will be at the magnificent Museumof Scienceand Industry when museum staff will demonstrate some of the machines. We will be able to see, smell and hear the largest collection of steam mill engines in the world and marvel at some of the finest locomotives ever made while networking with friends, colleagues and suppliers over a glass of wine.
Saturday is a packed day with an interesting mix of information professionals and users of their services. Tim Buckley Owen is the keynote speaker, Karen Blakeman will update us on online searching skills and Jennifer Rowley will advise us on how to communicate with managers and a session on ethics is bound to create considerable debate. Other speakers include Matthew Butson (Getty) on managing and exploiting picture archives, Ray Alexander (BBC) on training journalists, and there are sessions on digitising newspaper archives and on adding value in independent TV production. In the evening we relax and chat over the conference dinner in our own dining room at the hotel.
On Sunday morning we walk to the delightful canal side location of the Castlefield Rooms to discuss with Brian Hanrahan of the BBC how a journalist works in the modern newsroom. He will bring to us his extensive experience of coping in a very pressurised, high technology environment with the need for fast, thorough and detailed research. The formal part of the conference ends with lunch before we disperse.
