Meetings Secretary Report 2001

Maria Nolan

I took over from Susan Pryce as acting Meetings Secretary in October 2000.

During 2000 - 2001 there have been 5 meetings 3 organised by me and 2 by Susan.

Summary of meetings

Although I don’t have exact figures all were well attended and I receive very positive feedback from attendees at the Getty Images and EIU meetings.

1. July - visit to Home Office Information and Library Service. Thank you to Nigel Owen for organising this.

2. Oct - Information Resources Centre at the American Embassy. Very interesting especially in reflection of what happened afterwards and the disputes over voting during US elections.

3. Nov - Research Central intranet at the BBC. Sponsored by Bright Station and presented Linda McCabe and Matthew McDonnell from BBC Research Central.

4. Dec - SLA European Chapter Online Breakfast - Novotel London West, Hammersmith - members and friends of the SLA European Chapter over a friendly and free full or continental breakfast! Sponsored by Dun & Bradstreet - will go ahead this year same week as online. Quiet over the Xmas period.

4. Feb - Getty Images Joint with SLA. Dave Mort helped me to organise this and organised sponsorship. Thanks to Michael Carter from Getty Images who organised an informative presentation. He also arranged for picture procurer Tony French to present a picture researchers view. Very informative on digital archiving. Michael Carter left shortly afterwards when I phoned to thank him he had already left. Nothing to do with our visit I hope. An article for Deadline was written by Dianne Shepherd Information |officer at Environmental Data Services Ltd.

5. April - Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) - Lower Regent Street. Sponsored by the EIU. An interesting presentation on the invisible web and then a demo of the EIU web site. Very informative. Hanks to Juliet Leng who organised refreshments etc. An araticle for Deadline was written by Rosie Alldred, a researcher at the Information Centre at IPC Media Ld.

Graham Court from Aslib - Managing Information who attended was also going to write an article for an Information Journal. This lead me on to another event that I had in mind for Sept. A meeting with various recruitment agencies for librarians and information specialists in the media. I will hand over my contact details to Katharine Schlopflin.

I have really enjoyed organising meetings for AUKML in areas that I feel are relevant to librarians and information specialists in the media as all aspects of the media and librarianship are changing at a dramatic pace. I would like to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity. However after 6 years in London working for Reuters and the BBC . I am now moving to Nottingham to work in the NHS as an LIS Project Manager to Library Strategy.

I have had many suggestions from members and am can assure you I am not ignoring them but will pass these on to Katherine Schopflin. Many thanks once again.

I think it may be good to look more at the:

· invisible web and research
· using newsgroups
· Copyright issues and the internet
· globalisation

Dave Mort has now stood down from SLA and Kate Arnold is our contact now.
